I love tapping as my go to acupressure technique, but tapping is not the only way to receive the benefits of acupressure. Recently I purchased an Acupressure Mat and thought I would share some of the uses and benefits of these mats. The mats are great because you can just lie down, relax and receive the benefits of acupressure.
Acupressure Mats are useful for relief from pain including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches. They are great stress relievers due to their ability to induce a state of deep relaxation. As you relax, your energy goes up, you feel more alive and you sleep better.
Acupressure mats stimulate pressure points in your body. This stimulation triggers the production of endorphins and oxytocin which are your body’s own natural pain-relieving and feel-good hormones. Acupressure Mats increase blood circulation thus bringing more oxygen to the stressed, tense or painful areas in the body. Be sure to drink some extra water to help facilitate the release of any toxins or impurities from your body.
It is suggested that the mats be used daily for 20 minutes, but I use mine sporadically, mostly using it when I think about it, or when I am feeling like I need to relax and unwind. The mat can be used anytime of the day, but first thing in the morning helps get your energy revved up. Using the mat at the end of the day helps you relax and get a good night’s sleep. As with any energy work, regular use is best for the accumulated benefits.
The mats are constructed of thousands of tiny plastic spikes and have been referred to as “bed of nails” as the spikes are initially very painful. The pain subsides after a few minutes of use and especially with regular use of the mat. Acupressure mats should be used on bare skin for the best benefit, but a thin material, like a sheet, can be used at the beginning in order to adjust to the mat.
I also have the Acupressure Pillow which I use on my neck when I am lying on the mat. I use the pillow on my feet when I am working in my office and also on my back when sitting in my office chair. So you can see there are lots of ways to incorporate acupressure throughout your day.
Acupressure Mats and Pillows are not for everyone. Be sure to check with you health care professional if you have concerns or questions about using an Acupressure Mat for yourself. People with heart disease, on blood pressure medicine or pregnant women should definitely consult with their health care profession first. Do not use with open sores, wounds or serious skin infection or inflammation.
